This article, Biofuels in the U.S. Transportation Sector, posted on the Energy Information Administration (EIA) website is a 2007 article but is still an excellent source for statistics and information on biofuels, cellulosic ethanol, and biomass and their place in the alternative fuels used in the transporation sector in the United States.

In addition, the article touches on such subjects as potentially low-cost resources for biofuel (e.g., fuel-quality ethanol) production that includes cellulose and hemicellulose found in biomass that can be "broken down into fermentable sugars by either acid or enzymatic hydrolysis." A topic that is seen more in print and on the Internet is "cellulosic biodiesel" - similar to another biofuel, cellulosic ethanol, there are efforts underway to plan for and  construct pilot and commercial cellulosic biodiesel plants.

Following a similar technique of using various biomass feedstock such as corn stover, wheat straws, woody mass and various switch grasses, numerous efforts are underway to extract the sugars from the biomass and to use those sugars in the production process to create cellulosic biodiesel.
